Waste and Cleansing Operative

Working in waste can pay as much as a desk job. If you’re the sort of person who prefers to be out and about than stuck in an office you’ll be happy helping your community collect and empty bins, sweeping streets and keeping public space clean.

What you’ll do

You’ll work as part of a team to collect waste, enforce recycling measures and help support council policies relating to street cleanliness.

A typical day might include:

  • Collecting household waste and emptying public litter bins.
  • Sweeping streets and pavements using mechanical equipment.
  • Doing minor maintenance jobs, such as repairing benches.
  • Helping members of the public to dispose of waste correctly.
  • Reporting damage or hazards to your team leader.

Who you are

You’ll be physically fit and able to perform a wide range of manual duties. Rainy days won’t faze you as you prefer to be outside whatever the weather.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • A current, full, clean driving licence.
  • Experience in a similar role or ability to learn on the job.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

What we want

We need someone who can:

  • Work well under supervision and with other team members.
  • Communicate politely and courteously when responding to the public.
  • Take shifts involving early mornings with some weekend work.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness at all times.
  • Manage time effectively and undertake tasks with a positive attitude.
