Tree Surgeon

If you have a head for heights becoming a Tree Surgeon offers plenty of room to grow. You’ll be responsible for developing high standards of arboriculture practices across your city, dismantling trees to stringent health and safety requirements.

What you’ll do

A typical day might include:

  • Using felling levers, wedges, ropes, pullies, winches and tractors to fell or dismantle all types of trees
  • Clearing leaning, hung-up, damaged and windblown trees using climbing ropes and harnesses
  • Working on tree crowns, reducing canopy size and thinning to remove growth from within trees
  • Litter picking and bin emptying to keep spaces tidy
  • Checking equipment for faults and completing reports
  • Undertaking site assessments to ensure the safety of the team and public

Who you are

You’re comfortable working at heights and take Health and Safety incredibly seriously. You’ll need to be able to keep calm in sometimes dangerous conditions.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • 2 GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • Tree climbing Aa8 and Aa9
  • N. P. T. C. Certificate or equivalent
  • Relevant qualification in the use of chainsaw (units 10 – 15)
  • Qualification in performing aerial rescue
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety in an arboriculture environment and road traffic legislation
  • Full driving licence including CPC relevant driving category

What we want

We need someone who can:

  • Climb and work at a height of 30 metres
  • Confidently communicate with the public and respond to queries effectively
  • Undertake duties in line with codes of practice and safe working procedures
  • Use equipment such as chainsaws, woodchippers and grinders safely
  • Apply numeracy and literacy skills to complete work plans, risk assessments and other relevant documentation
  • Drive and operate heavy machinery

The post holder will act as a member of a small team and contribute to the delivery of cremations, front of house duties, attending scatterings, burials and other linked services. The individual will need to be flexible in their approach and working hours, suitably dressed and presentable in line with a Bereavement Service environment. Excellent Customer service skills are key to this role when there is a need to liaise with bereaved families, visitors and other stakeholders in a sensitive, professional and tactful manner.
