Traffic Signals Engineer

You won’t stand still as a Traffic Signals Engineer. Working for your local council means you’ll be in charge of the safe operation and maintenance of your city’s busy intersections. It’s a challenging and exciting way to apply your technical skills in the real world.

What you’ll do

You’ll use your understanding of traffic signal design to oversee projects that optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion.

A typical day might include:

  •  Reviewing performance data from existing schemes and addressing any faults.
  • Attending meetings to discuss ongoing projects.
  • Making a site visit to inspect signal equipment and recording information.
  • Supervising new installation and system upgrades, ensuring compliance.
  • Designing and developing traffic signal plans using software such as AutoCAD.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders, such as transport planners, developers and local businesses to discuss transport issues and provide technical advice.

Who you are

Innovative and creative, you’ll use your sharp design skills to find unique solutions to traffic or highway engineering problems.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • Degree or HND/C or demonstrable work experience.
  • Experience in leading traffic signal design projects.
  • Specialist design, validation and operation experience using relevant software e.g. MOVA, UTC, SCOOT.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior members of a team.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
