Planning Technician

Life isn’t mapped out for you as a Planning Technician. No two days are the same as you support senior members of the team in technical, administrative and financial tasks. You’ll be working on plans that make a real impact on your local town.

What you’ll do

You’re the go-to person for anything technical, administrative or financial to support council planning services. That could mean anything from filing reports to dealing with day-to-day enquiries either in person or over the phone.

A typical day might include:

  • General office duties such as answering calls, booking training and travel arrangements, and photocopying documents.
  • Raising purchase orders and processing invoices.
  • Preparing and maintaining database reports.
  • Using computer-based systems to prepare documents containing photographs and graphics.
  • Undertaking tasks set by different divisions in the planning department.

Who you are

You’ll be a good team player who loves to help people. Your creative brain will have you solving problems and keeping things running smoothly.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • 2 GCSEs Grade A*-C (9-4) or equivalent in English and Maths OR NVQ 2 in Business Administration.
  • Experience of providing technical as well as administrative support in a planning or similar environment.
  • Experience of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Experience of working in a team environment and dealing with customers.

What we want

We need someone who can:

  • Identify technical errors in planning applications, based on an established checklist.
  • Interpret information and situations using good judgement or creative skills.
  • Accurately input information onto the planning databases.
  • Use plotting and mapping systems.
  • Raise orders, invoices and payments using debtors’ and creditors’ systems.
  • Work with a wide range of audiences from members of the public to architects and solicitors.
