Ecologist

Being an ecologist involves highly detailed work, putting local ecological issues under the microscope to support sustainable development. You’ll work in a collaborative team to provide technical insights and guidance on ecological challenges.

What you’ll do

In an ecologist role you’ll analyse, negotiate, and provide ecology advice to support the council’s policies on protecting the built and natural environment.

A typical day might include:

  • Planning and organising projects and cases to achieve policy outcomes.
  • Developing practical approaches to resolve issues including planning, implementation and delivery.
  • Processing data and using analytics to recommend ecological improvements.
  • Supporting and building relationships with customers and stakeholders.
  • Preparing and presenting reports on a range of issues.
  • Giving technical advice and guidance to other members of the team.

Who you are

One minute you’re on a site inspection, the next you’re shaping government policy. Being an ecology officer is a varied role that requires a curious mind and proactive approach.

Ideally you’ll have:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • A relevant professional/technical qualification or be working towards one.
  • Relevant practical experience backed by evidence of specialist knowledge.
  • Ability to prioritise your own workload.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of software packages including in-house systems and experience of monitoring resources, if applicable.
