Cemetery worker
There’s no need to pull an all-nighter as a Cemetery Worker for your local council. You just need to enjoy being part of a team, love being outdoors and be willing to get stuck in.
What you’ll do
This job is all about creating calming and welcoming spaces for people remembering their loved ones. You’ll take pride in completing general gardening and maintenance tasks to a high standard using various plant machinery and equipment.
A typical day might include:
- Physical work that keeps you busy and focused
- Pruning, planting, hoeing and weeding flower beds
- Winter tasks such as leaf blowing, snow clearing and gritting
- Litter picking and bin emptying to keep spaces tidy
- Mowing and strimming using motorised machines
- Helping the general public with their enquiries
Who you are
A self-starter with a can-do attitude, you enjoy working outside in all weathers and can carry out instructions with ease. You’ll have a sensitive and caring nature that’s respectful of visitors and their needs.
Ideally you’ll have:
- A relevant specialist qualification e.g. manual handling training
- Experience in a team environment (within horticulture a bonus!)
- Working knowledge of health and safety procedures
- Good communication and listening skills
- The ability to manage own workload and use initiative

The post holder will act as a member of a small team and contribute to the delivery of cremations, front of house duties, attending scatterings, burials and other linked services.
